The Martha Washington’s Choice Bedspread is the most iconic terry bedspread ever produced by Bates. Released in 1940 under the name “George Washington’s Choice”, it was the first hobnail bedspread to ever be woven on a mechanical loom.
This vintage bedspread pattern is a replica of the handwoven candlewick bedspread that George Washington lovingly gave to his bride, Martha, on their wedding day. It quickly became a household favorite and continues to be our number one seller today.
The steadfast favorite has been in continuous production for over 80 years and during that time has also been labeled “America’s First” and simply “George Washington”.

I purchased my first King size Bates bedspread in the early 90’s, and just replaced it in 2025 with a new one. I love the fit, the long side and foot lengths, the fringe, and the beautiful woven pattern of the Martha Washington bedspread. Guess I just love everything about it, so I bought one that’s exactly the same!
My grandmother, great aunt and mom had these beautiful bedspreads. My mom got hers as a wedding gift 57 years ago and I am proud to carry on the tradition. Thank you for a beautiful heirloom.
