The Martha Washington’s Choice Bedspread is the most iconic terry bedspread ever produced by Bates. Released in 1940 under the name “George Washington’s Choice”, it was the first hobnail bedspread to ever be woven on a mechanical loom.
This vintage bedspread pattern is a replica of the handwoven candlewick bedspread that George Washington lovingly gave to his bride, Martha, on their wedding day. It quickly became a household favorite and continues to be our number one seller today.
The steadfast favorite has been in continuous production for over 80 years and during that time has also been labeled “America’s First” and simply “George Washington”.

This is our 3rd Martha Washington bedspread by Bates. The first was a wedding gift and we've never looked elsewhere with one exception, which did not last as long as our Bates. Excellent quality and comfort!! Thank you everyone for such an excellent spread!
I absolutely love my bedspread and am so happy that it’s made here in the USA. I’ve been wanting one for a long time. I remember my mother having one on her bed years ago.
I am very pleased with my Bates bedspread. It reminds me of the bedspreads from my childhood, and I like it so much more than all of the comforters and such that I have used over the years. The craftsmanship is wonderful.
