Description

The Martha Washington’s Choice Bedspread is the most iconic terry bedspread ever produced by Bates. Released in 1940 under the name “George Washington’s Choice”, it was the first hobnail bedspread to ever be woven on a mechanical loom. 

This vintage bedspread pattern is a replica of the handwoven candlewick bedspread that George Washington lovingly gave to his bride, Martha, on their wedding day.  It quickly became a household favorite and continues to be our number one seller today.

The steadfast favorite has been in continuous production for over 80 years and during that time has also been labeled “America’s First” and simply “George Washington”.

Thanks so much for such a special product made with care & tradition. This was a gift for my mom who at 95 still had her original Bates spread from the late 1950’s!
The new Martha Washington spread is a lovely revival of her original.

Martha Washington’s choice bedspread

Although we haven’t put it on the bed yet we did peek inside and it looks beautiful and is exactly what we wanted. Had a hip replacement three weeks ago so my wife is waiting for me to help her get the cold weather sleeping gear together and on the bed. Couple more weeks.

A Time Tested Classic

We love our Martha Washington bed spread. It is truly keeping us warm in our little mountain home here in Wrightwood, CA. Our last Martha Washington bed spread made it at least a couple of decades before replacing it recently. Your craftsmanship makes this product an heirloom to say the least! We even have this same bedspread (from your company) in our little cabin in the Big Santa Anita Canyon out here in the San Gabriel Mountains. Roadless and wild.
